Blockout window furnishings

You might know them as blackout window furnishings, we call them blockout, and that's exactly what you'll find at DIYblinds™. Our blockout ranges covers roller blinds, curtains, and honeycomb blinds. All custom made to your exact measurements for bedrooms, media rooms, and high-sun spaces where light control and thermal insulation makes a real difference. Every blockout product comes with a five-year warranty and our Price Beat Guarantee.

Blockout for every room

Not all rooms need blockout for the same reason. Bedrooms are the obvious one, whether you're a light sleeper, a shift worker, a new parent, or just someone who wants to sleep past sunrise in summer. Media rooms and home theatres need darkness to get the most out of a screen, regardless of what time of day it is. West-facing rooms and high-sun spaces collect afternoon heat as much as light, and the right blockout window furnishing addresses both. Our range covers all of it, with products suited to each situation and a made-to-measure fit that ensures you're getting the best light control your product can deliver.

Thermal insulation as well as light control

Blockout window furnishings do more than block light. A well-fitted blockout blind or curtain creates a barrier between the glass and the room, reducing heat transfer in both directions. In summer that means less heat entering through sun-exposed windows. In winter it means less warmth escaping through the glass. Our honeycomb blockout blinds take this further, with a cellular structure that traps air and provides a measurable improvement in thermal performance, helping reduce the load on heating and cooling systems year-round. For rooms that run hot, face west, or have large expanses of glass, the energy-saving impact adds up.

Two layers, one window

Most windows need more than one job done at once. You want light blocked when it matters, but something that looks considered the rest of the time. Double roller blinds sit neatly in a single bracket - a sunscreen blind for daytime softness, a blockout for when you need it. Double curtains let you layer a sheer and a blockout curtain on the same window. Fully customise your measurements and fabric combinations so the the products work together and suit your space.

Motorise it

Blockout blinds work hardest when they're used consistently, and consistent use is easier when operation takes one tap. Our motorised blockout roller blinds and curtains are compatible with the Somfy and Orbis motors. Set schedules, control by app, or integrate with your smart home.

Quality and peace of mind

Every blockout product we make is backed by a five-year warranty and our Price Beat Guarantee. If you find the same product cheaper elsewhere, we'll beat it. We also publish lightfastness ratings for every fabric in our range, the specific measure of UV resistance, so you know how your blockout fabric will perform in the Australian sun over time.

Frequently asked questions

Question Answer
Which blockout product is best for bedrooms? It depends on how much darkness you need and what else you want from the room. Blockout roller blinds significantly reduce light and are clean and minimal, particularly when motorised, though some light bleed around the edges is normal. Blockout curtains and honeycomb blockout blinds deliver a higher level of darkness and add warmth and softness to a space. Honeycomb blockout blinds also offer the best thermal insulation of the three. Many customers combine a sheer or linen curtain with a blockout roller blind for both style and maximum light control.
Are honeycomb blinds better for insulation than roller blinds? Yes. Honeycomb blinds have a cellular structure that traps air, creating a layer of insulation between the glass and the room. This reduces heat transfer more effectively than a standard roller blind fabric. For rooms that run hot, face west, or have large areas of glass, honeycomb blockout blinds offer meaningful thermal performance on top of light control.
Do blockout blinds work on west-facing windows? Yes, and west-facing windows are one of the best use cases for blockout window furnishings. They receive direct afternoon sun, which drives up room temperature and makes spaces uncomfortable. A well-fitted blockout blind or curtain cuts out both the glare and a significant portion of the heat. For west-facing windows we particularly recommend honeycomb blockout blinds for their combined light and thermal performance, or a motorised blockout roller blind that can be scheduled to close automatically as the sun moves around.
Can I get motorised blockout blinds and curtains? Yes. Our blockout curtains are available with Somfy motorisation. DIYblinds™ is a Somfy Online Expert, which means our team is trained to help you get the most out of the system. You can motorised blockout blinds with both Somfy and Orbis motors, depending on your budget.
How do made-to-measure blockout blinds and curtains differ from off-the-shelf? Fit is the main difference, and with blockout products fit matters more than most. An off-the-shelf blind that is even slightly narrower than your window will let light in down the sides. Made-to-measure blockout blinds are cut to your exact window dimensions so the coverage is as tight as possible. On a blockout roller blind there will be some light bleed. For curtains you can customise the width and length to maximise the blockout.
Are blockout curtains or blockout blinds better for a media room? Blockout curtains deliver full darkness and add acoustic softness to a room, which can improve sound quality in a home theatre.
What warranty do your blockout blinds and curtains come with? All DIYblinds™ blockout blinds and curtains come with a five-year warranty so you know you are investing in quality.
