How to Measure Roller Blinds

To measure for roller blinds, first choose a recess fit (inside the window frame) or a face fit (outside the frame). For a recess fit, check there is at least 85mm of depth, then measure the exact inside width across the top and the exact inside height. Don’t make any deductions, as we take 4mm off the width for you. For a face fit, measure the outside width of the frame across the top, then the drop to where you want the blind to finish. Finally, choose your chain side.

Before you get going

Have you designed how your blinds will fit?

This is where the fun starts! If you’ve already landed on the perfect fit for your windows, then you’re good to go. Otherwise don't stress, we'll walk you through the design options below.

Are your windows 'normal' size?

'Normal' for us means between 600 mm and 3000 mm wide, and 400 mm to 3300 mm high. If your window is wider than 3000 mm jump across to our linked blinds, which can span up to 6 metres.

Do you know what surface your blinds will attach to?

Our blinds attach to most surfaces, though it's always best to do your homework. Wooden window frames and wall studs are by far the easiest to attach to.

Have you thought about motorisation?

These effortless blinds don't use chains. They look great, are child safe and super accessible. Just add motorisation when you order your roller blinds. Please note: Somfy Altus motors are not compatible with double roller blind brackets. Explore our other motorisation options here.

OK it's time to start measuring, let's take it step by step.

Measuring up is easy; we just need to know three things: your width and your drop measurements, and which side you'd like your chain on. Here's how to do it:

1
Measure your width

Measure the exact outside width of your window frame across the top and write it down. This measurement will be your bracket-to-bracket width.

Please note that the fabric will be approximately 30-35mm narrower than your bracket-to-bracket measurement.

Note: If the size is over 3000mm check out our linked roller blinds.

2
Measure your drop

Measure the height of your window frame from the top of the frame down to where you’d like the blind to finish, and write it down. This may be at the bottom of the frame, just above the floor, or to match up with other blinds in your room.

3
Choose your chain side

Make a note of which side you'd like your chain to be on. Think about which side is easiest to reach, obstruction free and where the chain will be least visible.

Measuring up is easy; we just need to know three things: your width and your drop measurements, and which side you'd like your chain on. Here's how to do it:

1
Measure your width

Measure the exact outside width of the window across the top, and write it down.

Then, add at least an extra 70mm to your measured width to determine your bracket-to-bracket width. This additional measurement helps reduce light seeping in from the sides. For example, if your window width measurement is 1810mm, you would add 70mm, making the width to order 1880mm.

Please note that the fabric will be approximately 30-35mm narrower than your bracket-to-bracket measurement.

2
Measure your drop

Measure the height of the window from the top down to where you’d like your blind to finish. This may be at the bottom of the window, just above the floor, or to match up with other blinds in your room.

Then add at least an extra 150mm to the top and 70mm to the bottom to reduce light seeping in.

Example: the drop you'd like measures 1200 mm. You'll add 230 mm top and bottom, and then write down 1430 mm.

3
Choose your chain side

seamless and modern look
ideal fit for living areas
our customers often pick light filtering or sunscreen fabrics
let a small amount of light in down the sides
perfect for nice, deep windows with minimal obstructions
front rolling blinds are usually recommended
add motorisation for effortless luxury, you can choose either wired or battery motors for your blinds

OK it's time to start measuring, let's take it step by step.

Measuring up is easy; we just need to know five things - your depth, your width, your drop, which side you'd like your chain on and any minor obstructions. Here's how to do it:

1
Check your depth

Ensure that there is at least 60mm of depth between the glass and the edge of your window frame to provide enough space for the roller blinds to fit neatly inside.

2
Measure your width

Measure and provide us with the exact inside width of the window frame across the top, and write it down. We will deduct 4mm from this width to ensure your blind fits perfectly in the reveal. Please note that the fabric will be approximately 30-35mm narrower than your bracket-to-bracket measurement.

3
Measure your drop

Measure the exact inside height of the window frame from top to bottom, and write it down. When your blind is rolled down, it will sit flush against the bottom of the frame.

4
Choose your chain side

Make a note of which side you'd like your chain to be on. Think about which side is easiest to reach, obstruction free and where the chain will be least visible.

Our hints and tips

Want to know our top tips for measuring up like a pro?

Always write down ‘width’ and ‘drop’ next to your measurements so you don’t reverse them by accident.
Only give us the exact measurements we ask for. Our team custom-makes your blinds to fit your windows.
We make standard deductions for recess blinds, so you don’t have to. The roller blind width will be 4mm narrower to allow installation. Face Fit roller blinds are made as "exact bracket-to-bracket size", with no deductions.
Measure every window. The beauty of each house is that each window may have slight variations in size, and we want all of your blinds to fit perfectly.
We know every home is unique. For extra help finding your perfect fit, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Measuring your windows for pelmets

A pelmet is an optional decorative accessory which hides the brackets and roller hardware.

There are two finish options:

A

Metal - Powder coated fascia with matching plastic returns

B

Fabric wrapped - Coated with your chosen fabric wrapped around the valance.

A

A: Height - Our pelmets are made to heights of either 100mm or 120mm

B: Projection - This is standard based on the height you choose

C: Width - Measure the width from the outer edge of the architrave to the opposite edge

B

Pelmet height = 100mm

C

Pelmet height = 120mm
